American Gun Facts
What are the facts about guns in America?
46% of U.S. households own a gun. In fact, many own more than one gun, because there are approximately 460 million guns owned by U.S. citizens. That is over 100 million more guns than the total population of the country. (About 120 guns per 100 people.)
Now think about it, if guns were really about killing people, there wouldn’t be anybody left alive in the United States.
Look at these numbers: only about 30% of the population is armed. This means that over two-thirds of the population of the United States are not armed.
I would like to draw attention to something that the anti-gun crowd either ignores, or they skew the numbers on it (anything to justify their agenda). And that is how many times guns are used for self-defense. According to the National Research Council, during President Obama’s presidency, guns were used between 500,000 and 3 million times for self-defense each year. That equates to 57 to 342 times every hour. Many cases of self-defense are not reported to the police, so these numbers are most likely higher.
An estimated 25.3 million Americans (31% of gun owners) have used a gun in self-defense, and almost 80% of these incidents occurred on the gun owner’s property or in their home. Despite the propaganda surrounding guns, 81.9% of the time the gun was never fired. In fact, 31% of the time the gun owner simply told the criminal about the firearm which prevented the crime from taking place. Again, very few of these incidents are ever reported to the police.
Another fact I found interesting is that 57% of felons said they are more afraid of armed citizens than the police while committing a crime.
Only 0.8% of Criminals Purchased Their Gun at a Gun Show
79% of criminals caught with a firearm were not the legal owner of that gun according to a study carried out by the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
An analysis of crime statistics from the FBI found that counties that adopted Concealed Carry Laws had a reduction of Murders, Rapes, Assaults, and Robberies.
Here’s a big one: 94% of mass shootings occur in Gun-Free Zones.
The number of homicides committed by the use of rifles in the U.S. is very low. There are approximately 20 million rifles in the United States, yet there were only 364 murders committed using rifles in the U.S. in 2019. So much for blaming AR-15s and other “assault” rifles for all the murderous crimes. In fact, hands and feet, hammers and bats, and knives are used much more often to commit homicides than rifles. What about the argument that we should wait for the police to come to our aid and protect us? The average school shooting lasts 12.5 minutes, while the average police response time is 18 minutes.
“When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.”
